Op-Ed: Automation Threatens the Future of Black Workers in America
By National Urban League Published11 AM EDT, Tue Oct 17, 2023
A report about the future of work in the United States casts a somber outlook on the effects of artificial intelligence on African-American employment — particularly for African-American men.
According to a recent headline: Artificial intelligence is slated to disrupt 4.5 million jobs for African Americans, who have a 10% greater likelihood of automation-based job loss than other workers.
The report, titled “The Future of Work in Black America,” was produced by the management consulting company McKinsey & Company.
African-American men are overrepresented in the jobs most likely to be lost, such as food services, retail, office support, and factory work.
“Black America’s collective response to emerging technology will determine whether it is an opportunity — or an existential threat.”
— George H. Lambert Jr. President and CEO, Greater Washington Urban League

Two friends used AI and $185 to start a side hustle—they just sold it for $150,000: 'It really does print money'
Sal Aiello and Monica Powers built their lucrative side hustle in four days — and spent less than $200 to get it off the ground.
At first, they started running their side hustle ideas past ChatGPT, using the generative artificial intelligence chatbot as a starting point for market research. Then, they realized they knew how to ask ChatGPT the exact right questions to get useful answers — and other people probably didn't.
Aiello is a longtime CTO for tech startups, and Powers is a product designer who currently runs a strategic design and branding company called Mascot. In March, they decided to create an AI-powered research tool: Fill out a form about your idea, and the tool would input your answers to ChatGPT in a maximally helpful way.
"Maybe we can sell this…"

Google’s AI-powered search experience can now generate images
Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) will let you create images right from a text prompt starting Thursday, the company announced. Microsoft has offered the ability to make images from Bing Chat using OpenAI’s DALL-E model since March, so it’s not too surprising to see Google follow suit.
Here’s how it works. If you’re opted in to SGE through Google’s Search Labs program, you can just type your query into the Google search bar. After you do, SGE can create a few images based on your prompt that you can pick from.
“The company’s Search Generative Experience is getting some powerful new tools: the ability to make images and written drafts.”
